Fear and Comparison
We feel our greatest fears as humans through comparison. We seem to be constantly worried about the things we are doing, aren’t doing, what we don’t have enough of, what we have too much of. Our minds won’t simply let things be. My theory is that this comes from our obsession with exploration and a need to hunt and rise above our peers. Our caveman brains WANT US TO WANT. We need...

New Year
I haven’t posted in a long time, but I have made it a resolution to start putting work here again. I am going to try documenting my work from the last quarter of 2011 in the first weeks of this year in order to hopefully better understand where I am.

The Infinite Adventure Machine
David Benqué’s Infinite Adventure Machine creates random folk-tales, and is itself an adventure in what he describes as an unsolved computer science problem: automatic story generation.
Tales and myths; the core narratives of human culture, have been transmitted for generations through various technologies and media. What new forms might they take through...

Personalization in Media
I had an interesting thought today about the concept of personalization in media and how there is a possibility that that is a theme in my work / thesis concept.
Looking back at my work on the Pocket Nutritionist iPhone application, it was all about personalizing someone’s experience with their own health and their own nutrition, therefore creating a more valuable experience.
The Perfect...

The Physical, The Mental, and The Digital
I feel like I am currently in the process of cleaning and organizing my life. My lack of focus and concentration is off the charts, and that is largely due to the amount of confusion and disorganization that pervades my daily lifestyle.
As I am creating my attack plan to get my life “in order”, I realize there are 3 spaces that elements of my existence inhabit. These are the my...

Stefan Sagmeister on Happiness in Design
In my interest of bringing a sense of “well-being” into the environments I want to create in my work, I am looking at design that makes people happy. This TED talk by Stefan Sagmeister quickly outlines some of the works that have surprised him and made him feel good. My challenge will be to create some projects around making people feel good in...
4D Inspiration?...Grant Achatz
“The smell of burning oak leaves to me is a very powerful nostalgia.” -Grant Achatz
I am very inspired after hearing this amazing NPR “Fresh Air” interview with progressive cuisine artist (chef) Grant Achatz. I am floored by explanations about using aroma to enhance the emotional experience of a meal. I feel the concepts he is hitting on are along the lines of what I...

Focus, Focus, Focus
I just finished an amazing e-book called “Focus: A simplicity manifesto in the age of distraction” by Leo Babauta. I must say that Babauta is an incredibly generous soul for not only offering the book as a free pdf download option, but making the contents copyright free. What a gift.
Grab the life-changing book here:

Read. Enjoy. Keep the pdf on your desktop.

Exploring and Conquering Anxiety/Fear/Phobias...
Artist Krzysztof Wodiczko’s work deals with war, conflict, trauma, memory, and communication in the public sphere. I was very inspired by the talk he gave at Mass Art on Friday, though I was already looking heavily into his work beforehand. Namely, his piece, Dis-Armor. I have similar interests that I feel like I may want to explore for my thesis work. The idea of looking at trauma and PTSD...

Romanticizing Musical Objects: The Compact Disc
Nostalgia is a funny thing. Every generation claims that their childhood held a superior experience to all others before and after it. Everyone says that they had the best cartoons and toys and games and after school activities. There is even a bragging of what was not present in the upbringing. Fathers and Grandfathers everywhere say, “we didn’t have Pokemon or Power Rangers when we...

Mystery
In addition to being recently captivated by elements of danger in artwork, I also feel a very strong connection to mystery as an artistic element. Unlike danger, this is a concept that I know I can and will work into my own work. Perhaps I will begin with the Hollistic Encyclopedia project for Studio 2.

Danger Works: Examples of Deliberate Peril in Art ...
Though it is a bit far out from the rest of the work I am researching, I have recently been captivated by the concept of danger as an element in art. I figure there must be some reason I am gravitating toward it, and I suppose if I keep exploring this area, that might become more clear.
It could be said that the greatest art throughout history has been brought about with the intent of...
